Birding Central Park NY in spring

April 2026 Warm 16-20C

OM1mk2 150-400mm Zuiko Pro

Passing through NY on our way back from DC to Singapore, we had a morning free to revisit Central Park to see if the migrant warblers were back….we arrived around 0830 near Belvedere Castle and walked our way back down to 59th Street through the Rambles….

There were still some cherry blossoms in Central Park
first bird to show was the beautiful blue jay amongst the blossoms
common grackle
common starling
cormorants by the lake
waiting for the fish to show
Dark eyed junco
Downy woodpecker
lovely house sparrow
northern cardinal in flight over the lake
then finally a warbler…..the rather nondescript pine warbler
pine warbler
and a yellow rumped warbler which I had shot in Jakarta and Singapore before…how wide ranging they are
red bellied woodpecker
red winged blackbird
then another lifer…the somewhat drab ruby crowned kinglet
the ruby crown is hard to see in the kinglet
charming song sparrow
white throated sparrow

We birded till about 11am and headed back down 6th avenue past the grand buildings of manhattan, which thankfully has the beautiful green lung that is Central Park…..much nicer birding here in spring than summer!
