In Washington DC for our annual convention but found a morning free to ramble in Rock Creek Park about 25min north of the convention centre. As far as prime birding spots go this was a reasonabl cold mornine journey. We arrived by Uber at about 830am on a bitterly cold sunlit morning and alighted at the Nature Centre….sadly the Nature Center was closed that day for no obvious reason….there were a few park rangers about though.

We started birding around the car park as there was lots of activity…

The tufted titmouse was one of the frequently heard and seen birds in rock creek park
American Robin in the sunshine
BLue Jay
American goldfinch
Carolina Chickadee
common starling

We then headed to the maintenance yard which a lot of birders recommended….

Downy woodpeckers
pileated woodpecker
Eastern Towhee
house finch
mockingbird
Northern Cardinal
white throated sparrow
white breasted nuthatch

It wasn’t as active as I’d hoped and we were a week early for the returning warblers…but it was still a good way to spend a few hours in the morning..if only it had been a bit warmer…..we were to be luckier a week later in New York Central Park with the warblers….
