Hunting the Black naped monarch in Taipei Botanic Gardens

We arrived at the TBG around 10 am after the rain abated; the Taiwan Botanic Gardens is one of my favourite places in Taipei, a veritable green and verdant lung in this frenetic city. The floor was moist and the leaves shiny with rain drops as I reacquainted myself on this my third or 4th visit…we entered this time from the south side of the gardens near the lotus pond with the ornate National Museum of History adjacent…

the ubiquitous light vented or chinese bulbul is everywhere
Walking round to the Lotus pond with the museum behind, we were looking for the Agave chrysantha plant which was apparently in bloom and only blooms very rarely…then dies…

the TBG has lots of little charming pavilions tucked into corners
we ventured onto a boardwalk….
where a lovely black bulbul posed…
till finally a group of photographers pointed out the nest of the black naped monarch….we waited for a while….
and then he appeared…the black-naped monarch
We can just about see the black patch the back of his head…..prob the male one?

As always an enjoyable hour in the Taipei Botanic Gardens…..recommended
