In many previous visits to Sungai Buloh Wetland Reserve, we had always sought the elusive malecopper throated sunbird….with only poor sightings to show..this time we went with my expert birding friend and what a difference it made!

We started off at Car Park C Kranji Way (Visitor Centre of the Sungai Buloh Wetland Reserve SBWR) where the Singapore Bird Race normally flags off.

In the car park, first birds were the very common yellow vented bulbuls
The resident White Bellied Sea Eagle perched near its nest and was constantly harrassed by crows
At the first water body, some lovely common waxbills busied themselves
A laced woodpecker zipped past us into the trees
male Koel
a juvenile magpie robin posed
and then on a pole in the middle of the lake, a Malayan Pied Fantail posed on its nest
looking after its precious egg
keeping the egg warm
On another pole, another fantail treated us to aerobatics
off we go..
pied fantail swooping

We then drove over to the main visitor centre along Neo Tiew Crescent…confusingly it’s called THE Visitor Centre of SBWR. We explored the boardwalk and soon we heard the Copper Throated Sunbird (CTS) call…..

A darkish sunbird flew in…the throat looked dark…
As he perched and turned slightly towards us….a hint of the copper throat!
More coppery as it turned to face us
the magnificent male copper throated sunbird!

posing another way
multicoloured CTS
truly copper throated
pied oriental hornbill
crocs aplenty

Not many varieties but great sightings of the Copper throated sunbird and the Malayan Pied Fantail….recommended
