After departing the Xingu Indigenous Park, we flew directly back to Brasilia with a refueling stop in Agua Boa. Our overnight stay was at the Golden Tulip Alvorada Hotel which is set on the banks of a man made lake….where there are lakes, there must be birds…..so I was up at dawn for my usual ramble…

the sun rising on the right…

cast a lovely light on the hotel

An egret skimmed the water

as did another large flock

and then this ringed kingfisher joined the dove on this tree

Ringed Kingfisher

A great egret took in the morning light

this fellow zipped in and out at speed…

there were several of them and one of them finally settled nearby…

A gorgeous swallow tailed hummingbird with its distinctive blue head and green body

Humming away

the swallow tail easily seen

Here, wings and tail splayed

As the sun got higher, the light got better

Picazuro pigeon

Rufous bellied thrush

chalk browed mockingbird

brown chested martin?

Rufous hornero

rufous browed peppershrike

European greenfinch?
So just an hour and a half’s walk in the hotel’s garden yielded all these beauties….which just goes to show that we don’t really need to go too far afield to twitch…. Highly recommended location and hotel for birding.
