Kabini River Safari

When: October 2024 Weather: Cool 22C

Nikon P900, Leica M11/35mm Summilux

Early the second morning (6am), we went on a 3 hour river safari….

A covered boat with about 20pax on the Kabini River…
First sighting were these three cormorants…from the left…Little, Great and juvenile great cormorants
against the light, the cormorants posed
whilst we were hoping to see some bigger mammals on the riverbanks, we only got this spotted deer
the brilliant aquamarine blue back of the white throated kingfisher from afar
this magnificent grey headed fish eagle watched the water intently
the red naped ibis…
truly spectacularly coloured red nape
a Brahminy kite watched us…
and then a cormorants’ nest with infants and adults
then a beautiful sighting of the crested hawk eagle
magnificent from every angle
grey wagtail
common kingfisher
snake bird or oriental darter
of course there was an occasional crocodile to spice things up
the always beautiful pied kingfisher
with his mate…
and as our water safari neared its end, we approached this clump of dead trees …where if you look closely you might see a bird on one of its branches
as we got closer, we could see it was a raptor
a peregrine falcon!
he watched over us…
then took flight….the fastest bird in the world!

We didn’t see any of the big mammals on this water safari (not really surprising!) but we did see several very nice raptors which made it all very worthwhile….

Recommended.
