I usually stay in the city centre for proximity to the coffee shops when returning to my hometown of Ipoh in northern Malaysia for family events but this time I decided to stay a little out of town in the district of Jelapang, about 20 minutes away. There is a golf resort called the Meru Valley Resort which is set amongst the verdant hills of the Kinta Valley and I thought I might get some birding done there.

The golf course is fringed by forest and looked promising

the first evening we arrived, we toook a walk to the bungalow houses up the hill after the driving range..

One of the most common birds of the Meru Valley are these Asian GLossy Starlings, the juveniles having the white breast with streaks

Here an adult Asian Glossy starling in typical blackish green iridescence and a bright red eye

a colourful yellow vented bulbul sang

and they were indeed fairly common

a bright flash of yellow landed on a branch

the beautiful black naped oriole, seen throughout South East Asia

Oriental Magpie Robin

A pair of Pacific swallows

beautiful orange throat of Pacific Swallow

and from afar this looked like a brown shrike

a white throated kingfisher watching over the world

quite spectacular white throated KF

this was the most common KF here

back of brown shrike

Probable pied triller

another oriental magpie robin

and then on a house railing, thie active male olive backed sunbird was well framed

singing away

spotted doves
Walking back near to the resort accommodation, I walked down a culdesac and heard the persistent chirping of something in the trees…

Sunset over the Meru Valley
I had planned to have an early morning ramble the next day before leaving Ipoh but the sun only rose at 7am so I only had less than an hour’s birding before leaving for the airport….

beautifully landscaped gardens

I drove over to the driving range which is actually a range where golf balls are driven into a large lake from which I guess the balls must somehow be retrieved…

I found a path on the right side of the lake seen in the previous picture. The path took me up a small forested hill and I could look back down at the driving range and pond….more importantly, I got closer to the forest and had an eye level view of the canopy

perched on a distant tree was an orange breasted pigeon

a pair of red birds caught my eye but they were very far away

a closer look showed them to be the lovely Banded woodpecker with its red head and wings

a stretch

banded woodpecker

a black naped oriole and a glossy starling

final bird of the morning was this scarlet backed flowerpecker

Meru Valley
Although I was in Ipoh for only 24 hours, I managed to get two brief outings in the Meru Valley Resort and I think this is a nice place to stay at if you have a car. Recommended
