We took an uber from downtown Vienna to the National Park Visitor Centre (NationalParkHaus Wien-Lobau is what you search for on Uber) and about 30min later were at this large national park to the north east of the city. The centre was not open till 10am(!!) so we wandered in along well kept trails and paths. It was a lovely morning for a walk and but the bird life was somewhat limited…

the visitor centre where drinks are available after your walk in a nice garden

The park is well signposted and navigating it was easy

a fluffy european tree sparrow welcomed us

the road leading into the park

the dragonflies were active

blue tits were the most common bird seen

a quick blurry glimpse of ? flycatcher

lovely forest

autumn colours beginning

crows are normally pretty ugly creatures but the Hooded crow here was actually rather smart!

and in the distance we saw this brown bird…

it was a common kestrel…one of my favourite raptors which I had just seen also in San Francisco a few weeks ago…amazing that this beautiful bird has such a wide range
We then heard a loud chirping from a nearby tree and after searching for a while…..

a greater spotted woodpecker was busily pecking

- it flew off to a nearby tree

and posed for us

there were nice ponds

another blue tit bade us farewell
Our ramble took us 3 hours and covered 7km….nice way to spend the morning.
