In Tokyo for 24 hours and made it to the Kasai Rinkai Koen, a bayside park just 20min from Tokyo Station by JR. Arriving at the station which is just one stop before the Disneyland stop, it didn’t look very encouragin birding wise. There were lots of people that saturday afternoon and there was even a large ferris wheel and a large aquarium there….all not very conducive to birding. ..

ferris wheel in the park

first bird was a crow

a large billed crow…easy to see why it’s so named!

the paths were well kept….I headed into the main square and headed to the right away from the aquarium

a number of raucous birds were busy in the trees

a brown eared bulbul

here the brown ear is more clearly seen

pretty summer flowers

white cheeked starling

Things were a bit quiet in the forested areas so I made my way to the waterfront where there was lots of activity….

There was a levee with the city in the background

and interesting structures out at sea..wonder what the blue striped thing on the right is…

a seagull perched on a buoy

and something stuck its head out near the water…

a beautiful cinnamon brown whimbrel

whimbrel on left and another small grey bird on the right

The small grey bird was probably a greenshank

and then another brownish bird appeared… a grey tailed tattersall

the wimbrel appeared again with his snack

and finally flew off into the distance

This was a fun ramble just 30 min from tokyo station and the few birds I saw made it more interesting. Somehow, my birding outings in Japan have never yielded many good sightings…
