A hot humid morning in Hutchison Park, HongKong

Staying at the Kerry Hotel in Hunghom for a meeting, as usual I found a green patch on Google Maps nearby…Hutchinson Park . The weather had been unbearably hot the day before but I thought it would have been cooler at 6am…..it wasn’t….it was 32C and muggy.
Just about 10 min walk from the Kerry, Hutchinson Park is a small landscaped park where lots of locals were out practising Tai Chi and other exercises at that time….

Access is from Dyer Avenue on the left and I entered the park at the top left corner…

The north west entrance

First bird of the morning was this oriental magpie robin who gave me my obligatory ass shot

He picked up a juicy bug for breakfast…

and then in a flurry of movement, these three red billed blue magpies settled on this branch

and came to the ground to feed…

landscaped gardens

A common spotted dove perching on a roof detail of the same colour

The red whiskered bulbul was easily seen

here flashing its orange vent

chinese pavilions and walkways

Black collared starling

leaving the park, I headed down to the waterfront

where a black crowned night heron had just caught his breakfast

and kept an eye out for more fish

as the sun came out, HongKong harbour sparkled

another two bulbuls appeared

and to end the morning…another oriental magpie robin with a wasp for breakfast

Oriental Magpie Robin
Birding in HK on a hot summer’s day cannot really be said to be fun….nevertheless it was quite satisfying doing this walk over 1.5 hours before my meetings started.
