I finally made it to Changi Museum and Chapel, a place which I had intended to visit for long but somehow never did; you know what it’s like, when something is on your doorstep, you take it for granted. Changi Museum and Chapel is of course a memorial to the Japanese occupation period of 1942-1945 in Singapore and details the life, trials and tribulations of the the POWs who were incarcerated in Changi Prison. Having recently viewed the Centre of Naziism in Nurnberg, Changi’s record of the Japanese occupation was at the other end of the spectrum….the small complex is a reconstruction of the old Changi chapel, built by POWs on the grounds of the original Changi prison. Small though it is, Changi Museum is a gem of a museum, with great detail to the many activities that the POWs were involved in, graphic and gory black and white photographs.

Changi Museum is a brilliant little museum. It’s far from the city but very near the airport so if you have a couple of hours to spare when transiting Changi airport, you can visit it easily. Get the audio guide. Then have a very nice lunch or dinner at the adjacent charming bar/restaurant called BARK Cafe.
