Birding Herdsman Lake, Perth, Western Australia

When: February 2026 Weather: Cool 20-25C

OM1mk2 150-400mm Zuiko Pro

We landed in Perth at 530am for a two day stopover en route to Christmas Island (or so we thought) and we headed straight to Herdsman Lake which my friend had been telling me about for a while now. It was about 730am by the time we got there….

Herdsman Lake is a green lung around a large lake in Perth….
the red wattlebird whilst common in WA, is a very attractive bird
not one, not two but three tawny frogmouths welcomed us
Australian shelduck
australian silvereye…similar to our Swinhoe’s white eye
black headed ibis
star bird of the morning….the buff banded rail
grey fantail
Willie wagtail in flight
a boardwalk behind the discovery centre skirts the lake….here a pied stilt in flight
The lovely purple swamphen illuminated by early morning sunlight
new holland honeyeater
another star bird…the striated pardalote
striated pardalote
the little pied cormorant bade us farewll

This was a great place to start birding in Perth….highly recommneded
