We were in Sanur, Bali staying at the beautiful Meru Hotel right next to the Bali Beach Convention Centre for some meetings and I was delighted to find that there was a patch of green opposite our hotel. The Ethno Botanic Gardens is small but nicely walkable for an hour or so…..we did an early morning and early evening walk….

The morning started off very wet…..it finally stopped raining at 7am and first bird was this very wet long tailed shrike in the hotel grounds

The Javan Coppersmith Barbet is a subspecies of the one we see widely in south east Asia…Javan subspecies (Psilopogon haemacephalus roseus) with more red in the face and less yellow

and in the evening, this common iora entertained us royally

I normally wouldn’t shoot the common Zebra Dove, but this one posed and with the dark background, it turned out to be my favourite picture of this shoot…

Birding in adjacent parks and gardens without the travails of long road journeys or hikes is such a bonus on our travels….if you happen to be in the Sanur area, don’t miss this lovely patch of green! Recommended.
