Dungarpur Birding

When: August 2025 Weather: Hot 25-30C

Nikon P900

We were taken on a 3 hour journey by road from the Leela Hotel in Gandhinagar, Gujarat to the palace called Udai Bilas in Dungarpur, Rajasthan. The palace which is still in use by the maharajah and family sits on the lakeside and has several museums on site…..Being on the water meant water bird sightings were good!

The entrance to Udia Bilas Palace…the road outside to the left in the background is where we did a couple of morning rambles…
the palace itself with a warm swimming pool where drinks were served in the island
Facing the palace about 50m away is a temple on the water
Painted storks were a dime a dozen…
and they put on a veritable flying display
black winged stilts
shy Indian spoonbills
black headed ibises were easily seen
snow geese
red wattled lapwings
white wagtail
grey headed swamphen
lesser whislting ducks
the very striking pheasant tailed jacana
lotuses and water lilies
ashy priniaas were everywhere
but we got the best pictures here at the lakeside
male purple rumped sunbird
male purple-rumped sunbird in the garden
setting sun on the painted storks
painted storks at sunset
water buffalo cooling off
woolly necked storks
sunset over dungarpur

The birding around the palace and the lakeside was very good indeed…and if you take room 1, you can birdwatch in comfort from your room overlooking the lake…

Highly recommended
