We had a 7am start to visit the Tai Ko Pau Nature Park in the New Territories of Hong Kong on our last day in HK. It’s about a 20 min drive from the Kerry Hotel in Hom Hung…

Dawn view from the Kerry Hotel
When you get to Tai Po Kau Nature Park, there is a car park on the left …only catch is that the parking meters only start working at 8am!
we birded by the road waiting for the meter to be active…and a fleeting glimpse of a skittish Red billed Leiothrix was a nice sighting but terrible shot
an oriental magpie robin at the car park…
The entrance to Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve…..it’s a gentle slope mostly and takes abpout 15 min to get to the toilet block and the small dam…
The locals were out in force walking the dogs
Stunning views of the water
the greenery was lush…too lush and most birds were difficult to see despite many calls
Halfway up…when you get to the toilets and the dam, go down by a little slip road and that’s where some birds were seen….
an Asian tit was busy and wouldn’t keep still
A velvet fronted nuthatch appeared
Hello!
walking on the path in front of the dam and next to the stream, we end up at this junction…the study centre…
Male red whiskered bulbul

female red whiskered bulbul

bickering couple
common tailorbird
tropical swallowtail moth
final bird of the morning…the crested serpent eagle

I think the Tai Po Kau nature reserve has potential for a great day’s birding with a local guide. Next time when I have more time and maybe not at the height of summer it would be more productive…
