In Melbourne this late autumn for a few days visiting relatives and had time to explore a few local parks and the zoo….I stayed in the Hawthorns on the east side of the city…

The autumnal colours were in full display…
First walk was down to the Fairview Park by the Yarra river…..
where a gray butcherbird welcomed me…it has a curved upper beak like a shrike
the commonest bird by far was the noisy miner
city of melbourne in the distance
beautiful Yarra river
a very regal crested pigeon
pink galahs were common
the well camouflaged bell miner
actually the birding was much better at the zoo!
always a delight to see a snow leopard….but we also got great views of platypi and wombats…
white faced heron in the aviary
satin bowerbird
stone curlew which I had seen in Hamilton Island last year
black necked stork
buff banded rail
but then out in the open, this charming female superb fairy wren
gray fantail
and a rather large red wattlebird roamed freely
eurasian blackbird in the autumn foliage
regent honeyguide
at the local park…this dog chased the pink galahs
Fritz Holtscher Park in Hawthorn
On my last day, we went to the Studeley Park…
lovely setting
rainbow lorikeets were everywhere
Australian wood ducks
Pacific Black Ducks
star bird of the day was the Turquoise Parrot, a lifer
Coot on the water
wild wagtail
the ubiquitous Pied currawong bade me farewell

so just a short 4 day trip to Melbourne…nice food, great coffee and reasonable birding!
