Our next morning outing with guide Weng Chun started at 730am…it didn’t look good…misty+++ damp in the air….we got to the rendezvous point at the entrance to Bishops Trail only slightly late.
No sooner had we parked than Weng whispered Trogon! In the heavy mist, this is the best I could do….the female red headed trogon with a not red headand then just round the corner, the male red headed trogon …appropriately namedthe brilliantly red head and chest stood out even in the mist
And then in the bank next to the road, there was a scurrying and after a while….
the streaked wren babbler….a little similar to the pygmy cupwing seen the day beforestreaked wren babblerand then right opposite the entrance to Hemmant Trail, up and embankment, we heard the unmistakeable song of the pygmy cupwing…..singing lustilyA large bird then flew between the trees…the green billed malkohaposed for usmoving on to the road outside the old Jelai Hotel…this cuckoo shrike was barely seen in the mistwe finally got to see the symbolic bird of FH, the silver eared mesia! Our final morning, it was a bit quiet..
And not having seen the pygmy cupwing before….this was our third sighting of this lovely bird on this trip!
Our 4 day birding trip ultimately yielded a very decent 40 species, thanks largely to the skill and enthusiasm of our guide Weng Chun whom you can find by searching for ‘A Malaysian Birder’. This was my most successful Frasers Hill bird trip! Highly recommended.
Thank you for sharing your experiance. Will be going to Frasers after an interval of about 15 years. Hope to get as lucky as you.
