Day 3 morning birding Frasers Hill

When: December 2024 Weather: cool 20C

Nikon P900, NikonP950

Our next morning outing with guide Weng Chun started at 730am…it didn’t look good…misty+++ damp in the air….we got to the rendezvous point at the entrance to Bishops Trail only slightly late.

No sooner had we parked than Weng whispered Trogon! In the heavy mist, this is the best I could do….the female red headed trogon with a not red head
and then just round the corner, the male red headed trogon …appropriately named
the brilliantly red head and chest stood out even in the mist

And then in the bank next to the road, there was a scurrying and after a while….

the streaked wren babbler….a little similar to the pygmy cupwing seen the day before
streaked wren babbler
and then right opposite the entrance to Hemmant Trail, up and embankment, we heard the unmistakeable song of the pygmy cupwing…..
singing lustily
A large bird then flew between the trees…the green billed malkoha
posed for us
moving on to the road outside the old Jelai Hotel…this cuckoo shrike was barely seen in the mist
we finally got to see the symbolic bird of FH, the silver eared mesia! It used to be common and seen everywhere in FH but this time it took us a while to locate it
silver ears very evident here…
A blue winged minla….here you can just see the faint blue streak on the wing feathers

lesser racquet tailed drongo
white throated Malayan fantail
fire tufted barbet..the second of the 3 barbets we saw

Imperial mountain pigeon from afar
the charming little pied flycatcher

We then moved to an area just behind the food court …

where a flock of grey chinned minivets, both male and female painted a picture in the grey canvas of the sky…looked a bit like a Wu Guanzhong painting

female grey chinned minivet
Our guide heard the collared owlet and it was sometime before he located it…
the collared owlet, harrassed by all the other little birds around
and nearby we heard the strident and v loud two tone call of the Dark Hawk cuckoo
dark hawk cuckoo
firebreasted flowerpecker
orange bellied leafbird
mountain bulbul
the black and crimson oriole…a bird I’d first seen 10 years ago and not again till now….
the third of the barbets onthis trip…the black browed barbet

And after a quick lunch when we were about to part ways with Weng near the Bishops trail, he said ‘bird wave’….and we got a few more…

the blue nuthatch again! Quick and restless, he was a challenge to shoot

the blue vent of the nuthatch
the stunning blue nuthatch
Hume’s white eye
grey throated babbler
better pictures of the grey throated babbler ..the grey throat centrally flanked by white

and then the beautiful yellow of the Sultan Tit

Final bird of the afternoon..the colourful fire bellied flowerpecker

Our final morning, it was a bit quiet..

And not having seen the pygmy cupwing before….this was our third sighting of this lovely bird on this trip!

Our 4 day birding trip ultimately yielded a very decent 40 species, thanks largely to the skill and enthusiasm of our guide Weng Chun whom you can find by searching for ‘A Malaysian Birder’. This was my most successful Frasers Hill bird trip! Highly recommended.
