Fraser’s Hill Ken House Birding

When: December 2024 Weather: Cool 15-25C

Nikon P900, Nikon P950

Not having been back to Fraser’s more than 5 years, this was a long overdue visit to my old happy birding grounds…this time a friend had recommended we try an old corporate bungalow called Ken House along Jalan Mager and Jalan Richmond….the house looked lovely from the outside with beautiful gardens….sadly the inside was not in great shape…

Ken House in Jalan Richmond….beautiful grounds and in the heart of prime birding territory…
the view from the house…after settling in, we took a walk to the end of the road where the dilapidated Richmond Bungalow was…..
a macaque welcomed us
the first of many sightings of the ubiquitous streaked spiderhunter
and busy among the flowers in the garden was this stunning black throated sunbird
maybe even mroe stunning from the front!
the much drabber female black throated sunbird
mountain fulvetta
the road outside Ken House
one of the most common birds in fraser’s, the chestnut capped laughing thrush
long tailed sibia
black eared shrike babbler
glimpse of a blue nuthatch through the foliage
the impossibly beautiful blue nuthatch!..Quite difficult to shoot…

This time we engaged a guide called Weng Chun who had been highly recommended on line and by my birding friends…..he brought us to the end of Jalan Richmond to the feeding station to try for the Malayan Partridge…..

As we waited for the Partridge to show, this stunning Rufous browed flycatcher appeared
characteristic white patch at the throat with the rufous brow clearly seen

We waited and waited and still the partridge did not show….we were packing up to go when we saw a couple of large shadows moving behind the foliage…. and thenit burst free and landed on a branch right in front of us…

A white crowned hornbill!
not an easy bird to see up close, two of them entertained us
the white crown seen here
and then the rain came…wet hair day
flying off in the rain

So Jalan Richmond proved to be a rather fruitful area to bird and the white crowned hornbill and blue nuthatches were great viewings! Recommended.

  1. Thank you for the lovely, nostalgic post with superb sightings especially the white-crowned hornbill.
In 2016 you wrote “I would never stay anywhere else but Stephen’s Place in Frasers Hill.” Any reason for the change?
And, since you were in the area, did you get any news of the status of the Richmond and Singapore bungalows? We used to stay in them regularly before, sadly, they closed.
