The Doujiangyen irrigation system was built more than 2000 years ago by an astonishingly smart and far sighted governor of the region called Li Bing. It was a system of without dams, using weirs for flood control, irrigation of the plains and water supply. Amazingly it is still in use today! We started our tour by taking a very long covered escalator up to YuLei Pagoda to get a panoramic view of the waterways….
This is the covered escalator up to the pagodaThe YuLei pagoda which overlooks the waterways….its a bit of a climb up 6 levels…but worth itview of the fishs’ mouth where the river is splitthe Minjiang riverstunning views from the Pagodasuspension bridge across the channelLeaving the pagoda, we walked down a series of staircases between numerous temples and arrived at a special one honoring the memory of Li Bing, the man who built the Dujiangyen irrrigation system 2000 years agowe got down to the river where the speed of the water flowing was remarkable…photos don’t do justice the the rush of the torrent…a plumbeous water redstart watched the riverthe bottleneck…crossing the suspension bridge, we walked into the dujiangyen town centre where the main attraction is the Nanchiau Bridge…the entrance into nanchiau bridge (nanchiau of course already means southern bridge so technically we shouldn’t say nanchiau bridge, but nanchiau onlyfrom the nanchiau, a female redstart perched above the torrent…you can imagine how fast the current is from the background water blur even though I was shooting at a normal shutter speed female redstart with dinnera light vented bulbul also watched the waterby this time, it was getting dark and Nanchiau looked even better by nightand yulei pagoda glowed in the night sky
Highly recommended…the dujiangyen area is well worth a visit.
