In Bangkok for a weekend, I found a green patch called Santiphap Park just 10 minutes walk from the Sukosol Hotel where we were staying so I headed there at 645 am not really knowing if there would be any avian life more than sparrows and mynahs….I cut through the grounds of the King Power headquarters and found the 8 acre park easily.

Approaching Santiphap Park as the sun rose…
a shrine greets you as you enter , set amongst lush greenery
heading in one of the first birds I saw was this rather striking feral pigeon..now I don’t normaly shoot feral pigeons but the ones in this park had very interesting black and white coloration…
another feral pigeon
this is a charming little park punctuated by water features and light landscaping
a male olive backed sunbird greeted me..
there were lots of these streak eared bulbuls around
pretty flower beds
and then this charming little stunner appeared..the coppersmith barbet
showing his green back and lovely face
Here, the coppersmith barbet with breakfast in his mouth alongside a spotted dove
tai chi in the park with some zebra doves for company
purple lagerstroemia flowers below the golden chain blooms
lagerstroemia flowers on the water..
Asian pied starling
a monitor lizard checked me out
zebra dove
and then this lovely malayan pied fantail put on a display….

oriental magpie robin
a stunning pure white dove
then a lifer in this little park….the black winged cuckoo shrike

I saw this huge raptor like bird which is probably just a large local feral pigeon or a black wood pigeon…
so this lovely oasis within the heart of Bangkok provided me with a most fruitful morning away from the city strife.

Small though this park is, there’s enough going on for any birder to have a good time here in just an hour or two….highly recommended.
