I always maintain that birding around the resort where we stay often yields more sightings than going for long tedious journeys and Juma Lodge and the nearby observation tower didn’t disappoint… After our morning’s river expedition, we birded around the house and then took the boat out to the nearby observation tower and ended the day with a night river cruise…

our accommodation high up on stilts overlooking the river Juma….when the rainy season is here, the water is almost up to the level of the balcony
an insistent house wren sang lustily
the male Glossy ant-shrike was ever present and noisy
this is the female glossy ant-shrike with its chestnut crown….the light was bad and she was very skittish and difficult to shoot….apologies for bad record shot
A Limpkin
and then it was off to the 32m high observation tower accessed only by boat even though it was just next to House 16……certainly easier than the 50m high tower in Cristallino
The observation tower….
one of the first birds we saw at the top of the tower was this stunning Blue Dacnis
blue dacnis or dacnis cayana
yellow bellied Dacnis…the male here with its black mask
yellow bellied dacnis with supper
Yellow rumped cacique or weaver bird
a nearby tree had several yellow rumped caciques
female flame crested tanager
Splendid red capped cardinal
masked tityra….male… tityra semifasciatus
female masked tityra with the brownish head
a roadside hawk posed willingly in the canopy
view from the tower of Juma Lodge
after dinner, we set out in the boat again and soon so this delightlful boat billed heron
a sun grebe by night
and a close encounter with a Caiman

So our first day ended having seen a reasonable number of birds in and around the lodge….
