Our third day in Sepilok, we went to the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre just a couple of km away…along with scores of other tourists all keen to see the iconic orang utan. You get to see some juveniles in the nursery pen and then watch the feeding session…having seen both orangutans and sunbears before, I was more interested in what else we might see there….

a pair of white fronted falconets guarded the entrance to the orangutan nursery ….way up high…
A pair of red eyed bulbuls in the orangutan nursery pen
Endearing tiny pygmy squirrel…
walking to the feeding station, this pretty snake awaited
Malayan blue coral snake..highly venomous
The Malayan Blue Coral snake….it looked different from the one that I shot in Singapore (See one of my earlier posts) and my snake expert tells me that this is indeed a Malayan blue coral snake but likely to be a different sub-species from the one we see in Singapore
Getting to the feeding platform at 10am, the ranger put some fruits on an elevated platform and we waited and waited…eventually after 30min, we saw some movement of an orangutan behind the foliage baring his teeth….
He swung down effortlessly towards the platform
where he really liked the Chinese leaves left there
and a few other pig tailed macaques joined him
Leaving the orangutan centre, this pretty crimson sunbird entertained us
we crossed the road to visit the sun bear sanctuary
The smallest bear in the world …the Malayan sunbear
an arboreal bear, he has huge claws helping him to climb these tall trees
and disappeared into the tree…
Heading back to MyNR, this cute Pacific swallow watched
and we got a good view of the white bellied woodpecker

The orangutan and sunbear sanctuaries are ‘to do’ things for most tourists but I actually found the other fauna more interesting…..
